What Are Oil and Latex Paints Good For? Are They Suitable for Interior Painting?

Painting Contractors Explain the Difference between Latex and Oil Paints

When talking about the application of latex and oil-based paints for interior painting, we must point out that these are, in fact, the best choices for room painting. A short visit from the local painting contractors, and just one coat of paint, can completely transform the way your home looks and feels.

Although both paints are suitable for interior painting, they do have some significant differences. Their colors are basically the same, because they have the same pigments. The carriers and binders of these pigments, however, are different. For latex paints the carriers are water and glycol, whereas the carriers in oil paints are organic solvents made of petrol.

Examples for interior and exterior painting

Latex paints. As experienced painting contractors, we think that latex paints are the most popular choice for interior painting. There are several reasons for that:

  • Latex is very easy to work with.
  • It does not crack.
  • The paint colors do not fade.
  • It dries very fast.
  • It does not leave brush marks.
  • Latex spills and spatters are very easy to clean.
  • It does not contain any volatile organic compounds, which makes it perfectly safe

Oil paints. Oil paints are preferred by many painting contractors for their excellent qualities. Unfortunately, they do not dry fast. Latex paints take about 4 hours to dry, whereas oil paints take at least 18 hours before you can add another coat.

  • Oil-based paints are harder to use, because they stick to every type of surface.
  • They are very durable.
  • Oil paints are some of the easiest to maintain.

Their durability makes them perfect for kitchens, because no matter how hard you scrub them, they will not fall off. This is especially useful when cleaning greasy food stains and spatters.
